You’re nobody – a prisoner rotting in a cell for some unnamed crime. That’s true at the start of every main Elder Scrolls game. But this time it’s a cell in Skyrim, the freezing Nordic nation between Oblivion’s sunny Cyrodiil and the weird dark elf land of Morrowind.

You’re released. Why, we don’t know yet. But you’re released into a nation that’s tearing itself apart. It’s a land governed by nine holds, regions that are traditionally each controlled by a single ruling family. But the system hasn’t lasted – many holds are now governed by elected councils, some have been overthrown, and they’re on the brink of war with each other. And as the conflict reaches crisis point, the dragons show up.

That’s the setting for the fifth game in Bethesda’s open-ended RPG series The Elder Scrolls. It uses a new engine, a new combat system, a whole new kind of magic, and an awful lot of snow.

Aliens vs. Predator developer Rebellion is giving itself something new to rant about, opening a division for the creation of social games. After launching a Facebook game based on the Evil Genius IP it acquired from Vivendi, it is putting more resources into the development of games for social networks. No specific projects from this division have been announced.

In a statement on the company’s website, CEO Jason Kingsley said that ” The release of Evil Genius has given us an appetite to look at other opportunities in the area,” noting that gamers can no longer be defined just as console owners. CTO Chris Kingsley called Evil Genius “a fun and rewarding project.”

In addition to this new undertaking, Rebellion also recently announced that its Asura Engine supports both the 3DS and the NGP.

While being shown a near final build of Hamilton’s Great Adventure, FatShark’s puzzle-platformer follow-up due to launch in April, FatShark brand manager Gunnar Johansson revealed that the title would launch at a $9.99 price point on both the PC and PSN platforms. Of course, FatShark wants to see the game on as many platforms as possible – they always say that – but right now the plan is to hit those two platforms initially.

Keep an eye out for our hands-on preview later today.

Curt Schilling and company made a lot of promises last year about Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, the first title from 38 Studios’ long-awaited IP. He said that we’d see “combat that keeps you doing combat” along with a “deep quest narrative” and old-school RPG tropes brought around to match up with action gamer tendencies. “I don’t know a way to tell you,” Schilling said at the time, that “‘Hey, we’re taking God of War and marrying it with Oblivion.’”

That’s a tall order, made even taller by 38 Studios’ origins — while there are a lot of veterans working on this game, this is the first time they’ve all worked together, and certainly there’s enough pressure and hype on the project that it seems like it could very well fall apart in disasterous fashion.

And then we saw the game running in full motion for the first time this week here at GDC 2011. Sure, it’s only an hour of directed gameplay, and sure, there’s lots of work yet to do on the title. But there’s this: All of Schilling’s promises were up there on the screen, and it seems more likely than ever that 38 Studios might just pull this off.

Rovio’s continued success with the Angry Birds franchise means we’ll be seeing much more from the Finland-based devs in the coming months — the company says it’s taking a “Disney 2.0″ approach to fleecing its bird-flinging franchise. “Look at how Disney got started. Steamboat Willie created Mickey Mouse, then they added more characters. You can see the same pattern today, but everything is happening much, much faster,” studio lead Mikael Hed explains in a recent Wired UK piece (via Develop), adding, “Other brands used to build recognition over the course of decades. We’ve done it in one year.”

A “collaborative” Facebook version of the game, as well as potential sports and driving spin-offs, are specifically named. Hed says the Facebook version will have “completely new aspects to it that just haven’t been experienced in any other platform,” and that “the pigs will have a more prominent role.” No word is given on when the game will launch on the ‘book.

This is, of course, in addition to the planned XBLA, Wii, and 3DS versions (it’s already out on PSN). There’s also a board game. And merchandise. And … uhh … this terrifying live-action version.

It appears that whatever Sony did to mitigate security issues in its most recent PlayStation 3 patch has enabled Infinity Ward to address its “unplayable” version of Modern Warfare 2. Creative strategist Robert Bowling announced on Twitter that a patch “will release on PlayStation 3 worldwide on March 8,” with an Xbox 360 and PC release following at some point. The patch, Bowling said, is specifically intended “to address hacking.”

Bowling detailed the process on the Infinty Ward forums, having updated his original post about the PS3 situation as new information was available from IW while staying intentionally light on details, “as we don’t want to give out any information that could potentially hinder the security any further.” He additionally noted that the patch “will also address a small geo exploit on the map Fuel, which players exploited in order to get inside a rock on the outskirts of the map.” Apparently some players were … rocking that exploit real hard.

[Thanks Tom M.]
